The Economic Affairs at Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific; South and southwest Asia (UNESCAP-SSWA Office) is inviting applications for its internship opportunity, in New Delhi.
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific is one of the 5 regional commissions under the jurisdiction of the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
It was established with the purpose to increase financial activity in Asia and the Far East, in addition to fostering economic relations between the region and different areas of the world.
The commission consists of 53 Member States and 9 Associate members, largely from the Asia and Pacific regions. In addition to nations in Asia and the Pacific, the commission’s members embody France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The area coated by the commission is residence to 4.1 billion people, or two-thirds of the world’s inhabitants, making ESCAP essentially the most comprehensive of the United Nations’ 5 regional commissions.
Interns work 5 days per week (37.5 hours) below the supervision of staff member(s) in ESCAP-SSWA which they’re assigned to.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
UNESCAP’s South and South-West Asia Office gives interns with an opportunity to boost their understanding of:
- Socio-economic challenges the subregion is dealing with in particular inside the 10 countries served by UNESCAP-SSWA Office;
- The processes of regional and multilateral cooperation;
- Mandates and operations of United Nations in developing nations in its efforts to offer policy recommendation, capacity building, and platform for governments to create space for financial and political integration.
Inaugurated in December 2011, UNESCAP South and South-West Asia Office (UNESCAP-SSWA) serves 10 nations within the subregion, namely Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Turkey.
The work program of UNESCAP-SSWA covers analytical and normative work, coverage support and advocacy, technical help, and capacity building actions, together with 5 priority areas, as per the mandate obtained from UNESCAP member States:
- Inclusive progress, the accelerating achievement of the MDGs, structural change and job creation, women empowerment, social protection, the post-2015 growth agenda, and sustainable growth
- Strengthening connectivity, commerce, and transport facilitation, and regional financial integration
- Regional cooperation for meals and energy security
- Regional cooperation for disaster risk reduction
- Assisting LDCs and LLDCs in the implementation of the Istanbul and Almaty Program of Action.
Under speedy supervision by a workers member(s), the intern is responsible for contributing to the research project (s) associated with the work program of SSWA for the implementation of the SDGs.
The matter of the project will rely on the intern’s background, abilities, and pursuits.
- Regular monitoring of related developments, policy trends, and information articles associated with the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs within the subregion;
- Monitor and collect details on nationwide policies on chosen sustainable development problems with ESCAP-SSWA member States
- Collect data, generate figures and tables, describe and analyze the tables and results to assist ESCAP-SSWA staff in associated research and analytical work
- Attend conferences, seminars, meetings, and different occasions and provide written highlights and briefing notes
- Provide administrative, organizational, and conference administration support for ESCAP-SSWA occasions
- Other actions as could also be determined by the supervisor
The United Nations Core Competencies include:
- Communication: Ability to draft clearly and concisely, good written and oral language abilities.
- Teamwork: Good interpersonal abilities, ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from different national and cultural backgrounds to realize organizational objectives.
- Client Orientation: Considers all these to whom services are supplied to be ‘clients’ and seeks to see issues from clients’ point of view.
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, candidates should meet one of the following necessities:
- Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equal, or larger); or
- Be enrolled within the last academic year of a first university degree program (minimal Bachelor’s degree or equal); or
- Have graduated with a university degree (as outlined above) and, if chosen, should begin the internship within a one-year interval of graduation.
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
- Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an extra official UN language is an asset.
- Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
