About the Scholarship

The Killam Scholarship and Prize Programmes have been established in memory of Izaak Walton Killam through the Will of his spouse, Dorothy J. Killam, and through gifts made throughout her lifetime. Their main objective is to assist advanced schooling and research at 5 Canadian universities and the Canada Council for the Arts.

The UBC Killam Doctoral Scholarships are supplied yearly from the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies. It was Mrs Killam’s need that these chosen to receive scholarships: “Be likely to contribute to the advancement of learning or to win distinction in a profession. A Killam scholar should not be a one-sided person… Special distinction of intellect should be founded upon sound character.”

Eligibility
  • To be eligible to use for Killam Doctoral Scholarship funding, candidates should have accomplished no more than 24 months of doctoral exam as of the beginning date of the scholarship.
  • Therefore, candidates to the 2021-2022 competition should have accomplished no more than 24 months of doctoral study as of 1 September 2021.

Scholarship Amount
  • Killam Doctoral Scholarships are probably the most prestigious awards available to graduate students at UBC. Approximately 15-20 awards are made every year to the top doctoral candidates within the Affiliated Fellowship’s competition.
  • The Killam Doctoral Scholarship currently gives an annual stipend valued at $30,000 for 2 years plus a $2,000 allowance for research-related travel during the 24 months of the scholarship.

Evaluated by way of Affiliated Fellowships-Doctoral award competition. Top students within the Affiliated Fellowships-Doctoral award competition are awarded Killam Doctoral Scholarships.
